Henson Staying in Pinstripes... for Now!
Wednesday July 2, 2003
ESPN's Len Pasquarelli reports former University of Michigan star quarterback Drew Henson is no closer to abandoning his baseball dreams and trading in his batting helmet for headgear than he was when he was drafted by the Houston Texans in April. And why should he? His baseball deal, as reported by ESPN, includes base salaries of $2 million (in 2003), $2.2 million (2004), $3.8 million (2005) and $6 million (2006). And those numbers are guaranteed.
If Henson were to jump ship now, assuming Yankee's owner George Steinbrenner would let him out of his contract, he would have to share what is left of the Texans rookie salary pool. Based on his selection in the sixth round, he would likely receive a three-year deal worth approximately $1 million. Thats not much compared to the six-year, $17 million dollar deal he signed with the Bronx Bombers!
"Nothing has changed," Henson told ESPN early this week. "If anything, the question is getting a little bit old, to tell the truth. My plans are what they always have been. Just because it's getting closer to the NFL (training camps) opening doesn't make any difference."
