Ugly Incident Mars Coney Island Contest

Monday July 7, 2003
William "The Refrigerator" Perry may have put in the most pathetic hot dog-eating performance ever by a man over 400 lbs. Given a 12-minute time limit, the Fridge managed just four dogs before giving in to reigning champ Takeru Kobayash, who gobbled down 44 himself. Kobayash, a Japanese native weighing just 140 pounds, won his third straight hot dog-eating contest Friday at Coney Island.

Perry's inability to put down a handful of red hots would normally seem quite strange in itself, but the story gets even more bizarre. According to reports from "The Chicago Tribune", the wife of fellow competitor and Canadian hot dog-eating champ Chris Eyre kissed the Fridge upon meeting him. Infuriated by the incident, Eyre allegedly punched his wife in the face, prompting officials to remove him from the contest.
