Bucs Consider Using CB Barber on Offense
Sunday July 20, 2003
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are considering using cornerback Ronde Barber at running back, the same position his brother Tiki plays for the New York Giants. Barber lined up in the backfield and took handoffs from quarterback Brad Johnson in a drill during the team's first training camp workout. And you can bet with Michael Pittman, who is facing two felony assault charges, and Thomas Jones, who was a bust in Arizona, in the backfield, the Bucs are looking for all the help they can get on the ground.
Barber is not completely without experience carrying the ball, having shared a backfield with his brother at Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, Virginia, but he hasn't carrired the ball on offense since.
"I flirted with it a little bit in college, but never anything in the game," Barber told "The St. Petersburg Times". "It'll be fun. Fun to toy with and see how fierce we can really come with it."
Barber will continue in his role at cornerback, where he is considered among the best in the league.
