QB Controversy New to Jaguars

Monday July 28, 2003
For the first eight years of their NFL existence, the Jacksonville Jaguars have avoided any sort of controversy at the quarterback position. Rob Johnson, now with the Washington Redskins, made just one start in his tenure in Jacksonville, but he never seriously challenged Brunell and was eventually shipped off to Buffalo for first- and fourth-round draft picks.

Through the 2002 season, Jags fans could always count on two things... Tom Coughlin at head coach and Brunell at quarterback. But things they are a changin' in Jacksonville with Jack Del Rio as the new field general and first round draft pick Byron Leftwich set to challenge the cagey veteran.

Should things go well and the Jags stay in playoff contention, Brunell will probably remain the starter through the end of the season, but the moment they drop out of the race you can bet the Jags will be anxious to test drive their latest investment.

Lost in the shuffle is backup David Garrard, who isn't likely to concede anything, but when it comes time for someone besides Brunell to run the offense, you can bet the Jaguars will give Leftwich every chance to win the job.
