Redskins Tell Big Daddy to Take a Cut or Be Cut
Tuesday July 29, 2003
Washington Redskins vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato told The Washington Times Monday night, "Big Daddy" Dan Wilkenson will be cut from the team if he does not agree to a pay cut by the end of the day Tuesday. Wilkenson was held out of practice on Monday while the two sides continue to negotiate, because the Redskins do not want to be liable for the $3.5 million salary he is scheduled to make this season, which they would be under league rules.
The problem with the Redskins' stance is it leaves a gaping hole at defensive tackle should they get rid of Wilkenson. That would probably leave Jermaine Haley, picked up from the Dolphins for a seventh-round draft pick, as the starter until the Redskins could pick up another team's castoff as teams begin to make roster cuts. Of course, Big Daddy doesn't hold a lot of leverage himself since it's unlikely any other NFL team would pay him anywhere near his current contract!
