Clarett Snubs Hall of Famer Allen
Tuesday August 5, 2003
Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett apparently blew off a scheduled meeting with newly enshrined Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen, Sunday, without so much as a phone call.
Clarett's high school coach Thom McDaniels, who set up the one hour meeting, told The Pittsburgh Channel, "Maurice just needed to be where he needed to be. It's very disappointing. I think it was a blown opportunity for Maurice to meet someone who knows more than him and has been to a place where Maurice wants to go."
Clarett continues to fuel speculation that he will challenge NFL Draft rules that make him ineligible for next year's draft, but with the frequency that he has made the lead story on the sports page lately, teams are going to begin (if they haven't already) to question this young man's character.
Clarett is currently being investigated by the university for his acedemic performance and whether he received special considerations when he was allowed to take oral exams to pass a basic African-American studies course. And then there's the little incident where he gave false information to the police by overstating the value of items stolen from his car. The NCAA is even doing a little checking into the sophomore running back's amateur status.
At this time Ohio State is keeping Clarett from practicing with the defending national champion Buckeyes until all investigations are concluded.
