Jags Star Receiver Suspended
Sunday August 17, 2003
The Orlando Sentinel reports Jacksonville Jaguars star wide receiver Jimmy Smith was suspended for four games Saturday by the NFL for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. The five-time Pro Bowl wideout vehemently denied using drugs after testing positive for traces of cocaine two years ago, but now he says he will skip the team's final two preseason games and enter a drug-rehabilitation center.
Smith released a statement through the team saying, "I would like to apologize to my family, parents, friends, the Jaguars organization and fans. I would especially like to apologize to [owner] Wayne Weaver, who I know I have embarrassed and disappointed so much. I am sincerely sorry that I have concealed this from everyone and let them down."
The loss of Smith leaves the Jaguars very shaky at wide receiver for the first four games of the regular season.
