Holcomb 's the Man
Monday August 18, 2003
Cleveland Browns Head Coach Butch Davis made it official Sunday. Career backup QB Kelly Holcomb will be the Browns’ starting quarterback for the 2003 season... or at least for the start of it. In an article on the Browns' official website, Davis said his decision is based on
a “gut feeling” that Holcomb is the right man for the job.
“You can not deny that Kelly has done well with the opportunities he has had,” Davis said. “He’s had some success. He’s earned the opportunity to be the starter now.”
"It was a gut feeling. My own personal gut feeling after talking to coaches, looking at them and watching practice for 2 1/2 years. I believe Kelly Holcomb has earned the opportunity."
Holcomb, who will make $875,000 this season, outplayed Tim Couch in two exhibition games, completing 14-of-21 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns. Couch will make $6.2 million standing on the sideline this season.
The decision ends months of speculation about who will be the Browns starting quarterback when the season begins.
