There Is No America's Team

Wednesday August 27, 2003
I say it's time for the Dallas Cowboys to drop the moniker of America's Team since they are not, nor have they ever been, a team favored by a majority of the population, and in reality, more Americans dislike the team than like them. Of course, a few Cowboys fans disagree with my thoughts. Check out this hot debate on the About Football Forum.

Ahhhh the jealousy burns deep inside…Go Cowboys! “America’s Team”

(2) football says:

No, you’re wrong Jim. Jealousy has nothing to do with it. It’s all about common sense.

(3) Tony Z says:

Actually, in every poll I’ve ever seen. The most popular team in the NFL, amongst fans, players (pre-NFL, of course) and non-communitsts is always the Dallas Cowboys. Granted, they are usually also voted the most disliked but that’s by those die-hards who really want their Bengals or Saints to be America’s Team. Also, if you listen to interviews with NFL players they are always surprised when they play Dallas at their respective home stadiums at how many Cowboys jerseys appear in the stands. Finally, if you travel abroad in Europe, Asia, Latin America, etc. the only American football team everyone can name is the Dallas Cowboys. Go into any bar anywhere in the world and if they know any NFL team it’s the ‘Boys. So Mr. Alder, get your facts straight before you start whining about who should and shouldn’t be America’s Team. Why don’t you just relax and enjoy your hair.

How ’bout them Cowboys!
AMERICA’S TEAM

Same old lame arguments Tony. None of which point to the Cowboys being America’s Team.

(5) Ryan says:

More people dislike them than like them…DUH…That goes for every team, given the total number of competing teams and fanbase.

For more fans to like them than dislike them, that would mean more than 50% of ALL NFL fans would be Cowboys fans, which is ludicrous to say. I would say 10-15% would be accurate, as there are 32 NFL teams.

With dominant teams in the 70’s, early 80’s, and the 90’s, a lot of America latched on to the superstars and the Super teams. Now with T.O. and a rising team, it continues.

But as for a single team, they probably have the largest fanbase…more poular than the other ones. The Steelers have to be #2.

The only way to prove this would be for ALL NFL fans to vote on their favorite team, but that’ll never happen.

GO COWBOYS…AMERICA”S TEAM!

(6) James says:

That’s my point, Ryan. If it’s ludicrous to think 50% of America supports the Cowboys, then they shouldn’t call themselves America’s Team. They may be the most popular team in America. I’m not disputing that. But that does not make them America’s team.

(7) justin says:

Look here JAMES, you just jealous cause you got some team you like and there not americas team. They wouldnt have got them the name if it werent true. Now stop hatin on the cowboys when you know they’re americas team. you just mad you aint got a team that gets the credit like they do, besides they from Texas so thats enough said right there. TEXAS BABY. Represent.

GO COWBOYS
James, you dont know nothin!

(8) football says:

Well by golly, Justin, if someone says it, it must be true, right? Now get back over with the other sheep.

October 24, 2006 at 6:30 pm
(9) justin says:

Like i said u dont know nothin. callin me a sheep, is that the best comeback you had. Ive been all across the country and have seen more cowboy merchandise then any other. So you just worry about your hair and leave the sports to someone who knows what they are talkin about.

So what else do you gotta say JAMES

October 24, 2006 at 7:26 pm
(10) football says:

Nah, that’s not the best I can come up with. It’s just the most fitting for people who believe everything they hear on TV. By the way… I just love the hair jealousy.

(11) Tony says:

When the 3 wisemen went out to look for God’s son Jesus what did they look for? The STAR! Likewise today when people look for God’s Team they look for the star. GO COWBOYS.
Aways America’s Team, ALWAYS!!!!

P.S. I just wrote to George Bush, a Texas native. I suggested to him to change America’s flag to America’s Team flag. Instead of having 51 stars on the blue portion just have a Dallas Cowboy Helmet with the the Star logo on it. I’m sure the Prez will approve it.

November 6, 2006 at 10:23 pm

Thanks Tony… that’s a perfect example of the fantasy this moniker is based on.

(13) roy says:

your justa little bitch who proabaly doesnt like the cowboys because they most likely beat your team in championship or super bowl, and youre just pissed about it, so your going to talk a lot of crap!! so stop being such a girl and admit that there america’s team!

December 11, 2006 at 11:50 am
(14) football says:

Roy… thanks for another perfect example of the ignorance that keeps this myth of America’s Team alive.

December 13, 2006 at 10:40 am
(15) Don says:

Give me a break, I am sick to death of the Cowboys being favored as “America’s team”. It is so stupid, but you can count on Dallas being aired every weekend and on Thanksgivinbg day, it doesnt matter how bad they suck the networks show the game, while the fans are missing watching good teams play. Wake up! If people Like T-O are suppose to represent America , that is a shame.

December 13, 2006 at 5:14 pm
(16) Claud D Wright says:

The Dallas Cowboys were billed as America’s Team NOT by the Cowboys themselve, as seems to the be opinions of far too many media mongers. The Cowboys were given that title back in the days of Tom Landry. In fact, after the Redskins won the superbowl I believe in ‘92, they insisted that they should be America’s Team. The President even responded, saying that the Cowboys were now and would remain America’s Team because they had done more for the sport of football than any other team in history. Add in the fact that they are tied for the most wins of any team, they have also been to more Superbowls than any other team (count them…its 8). AND if you look at the ratings, more people watch the Dallas Cowboys than any other team in the league. Love them, Hate them, you have to respect them. They are the Dallas Cowboys, America’s Team.

December 14, 2006 at 7:51 pm
(17) roy says:

no there is no ignorance, look at it, when the dallas cowboys went 1-15 back in the early 1990’s,texas stadium was still sold out, that very next season! if you look at any other team when they have a losing season, people stop wearing there jerseys, stop buying tickets to there games, they stop watching there games, they just abandon them!!! when dallas does bad they dont get abandoned! i know your propbaly going to say something back that makes no sense, to reply but go ahead and do it. i have so many facts to prove it i can go for a very long time!

December 14, 2006 at 8:20 pm
(18) football says:

So far you’ve proved nothing Roy. You’re making the same old lame arguments that don’t hold water. There is no America’s team because there is not one team that represents America. Unless, of course, you consider about 7-8% of the total NFL fan base a majority.

Give me your facts Roy. I can shoot them down as fast as you put them up.

December 15, 2006 at 9:07 am
(19) Claud says:

If 30 percent of the people vote for a candidate in an election, and he ends up with the most votes, he still gets the job. Of 32 teams in this country, more people are fans of the Cowboys than any other team. The Cowboys are still watched by more people than any other team. TV stations still get better ratings from airing the Cowboy games then virtually “any other game.” Its not a question of them having 10 percent of the fan base, its the fact that they have a far greater fan base than any other team out there. Add in those people that choose the Cowboys as their second favorite team, and you more that double that number. The Dallas Cowboys hold a commanding lead over any other team when it comes to knowing who they are and what they represent. More people know who Roger Staubach is than could tell you who the quarterback was for the then Saint Louis Cardinals. Ask ANY football fan and they could tell you who Tony Dorsett was. Danny White, Troy Aikman, Emmit Smith, Micheal Irivn, etc, etc, etc.

You want facts? The Dallas Cowboys invented more football plays than any other team. Perhaps you’ve heard of the Shotgun? The first time a quarterback (a Cowboys quarterback by the way) stepped into that formation, Referees had to stop the game to figure out if the formation was even legal.

And again, 8 Superbowl appearences. More playoff games than any other team. Hello? Still tied for first with 5 wins…you gettin any of this? And like Roy said, every game sold out. 15 and 1 or 1 and 15..doesn’t matter they sell out EVERY game. And why? Because they are AMERICA’S TEAM!

December 22, 2006 at 9:30 pm
(20) roy says:

hey do me one favor!! go to google search, or yahoo search, or any type of search engine, type in americas team, and see what the first thing is said at the top, and you tell me what it says? can you do that?

I am a HUGE Dallas fan. IF they are not “America’s Team” then why has the NFL network got DVDs out that says “Dallas Cowboys, America’s Team”? Even Madden calls them America’s Team. Sure we are hated by many, but we have the largest fan base in the world. So I have to say..we ARE America’s Team and ALWAYS will be!

GO COWBOYS

(23) roy says:

if there not americas team, then how come today on nbc they were talking about the wild card games, and the annoucer said staright out, americas team travels in to seattle to play the seahawks!! i wonder why they would say that?

January 9, 2007 at 10:50 pm
(24) mike says:

The game of football would not be played the way it is today if not for tom landry. He was the inovator and mastermind behind the name of america’s team, the motion you see in today’s offense,4-3& flex defenes plus perfected the shotgun formation is what poeple came to love dallas for, making them america’s team and still america’s team.

sorry – forgot to mention – scroll down to bottom, and notice its not even close compared to other teams. I’m all for letting the Saints “borrow” the term for this season, but the Cowboys are one of the most successful sports franchises in sports history. And those are numbers no one can deny.

Go Cowboys!!

January 18, 2007 at 6:19 pm
(29) AK says:

Well, the Cowboys did not coin the phrase “America’s Team”. Bob Ryan, Editor in Chief at NFL Films, did. He used that title for the NFL Films 1978 Cowboy’s highlight film. He said that the Cowboys were on national TV the most, and he always saw Cowboy jerseys even at games the Cowboys were not playing in. Now, did Texas E. Schramm take that ball and run with it? Yes, but let the record be set straight that it was NFL Films that put that monkier on us. Actually, many of the Cowboys of the 70’s hated the name.

On top of that, of the 5 highest rated regular season games on Fox, the Cowboys have three of them. The Cowboys also have the highest rated regular season game on cable as well. A Reuter’s poll a few years ago has the Dallas Cowboy Star as the most recognizable sports logo.

Sounds like America’s Team to me!

January 21, 2007 at 3:35 pm
(34) dave says:

Also this about the Saints being Americas team. Just beacause they were devastated by a hurricane. take that away and you have nothing. All the respect in the world to them. But that does not make them americas team. besides what state took them in. I believe it was texas

January 31, 2007 at 4:07 pm
(35) Walt says:

First the Cowboys do not claim to be America’s team. A writer in the 70’s put that tag on them because not only were they the most reconizable pro team in sports but they were either loved or hated not to mention year after year a top seller of merchandise. Also don’t forget America’s darlings our Cheerleaders. Tex Schramm heard it, ran with it, and took financial advantage of it for the Cowboys. Do not be a baby because you are not a fan of the Boys and it’s a great caption! I’m sure you believe Yankee Stadium is the house that Ruth buildt though. Just live with it and except it who ever you root for will NEVER be called America’s Team! Plus if the Cowboys really cared why did they not trade mark it. You just sound like soar grapes!

February 2, 2007 at 2:38 pm
(36) Nick says:

If you look at things more objectively, and not just who your favorite team personally is, you might conclude otherwise. I would assert based off of consistent popularity, longevity, performance (most all-time championships) and most importantly, the only team that is actually fully owned by the citizens of the USA only, it would be the Green Bay Packers. They are actually the only team in all of professional sports that can claim that.

Go Dallas, “America’s Team”

March 5, 2007 at 12:23 pm
(38) Claud says:

Whoa there Nick! Haven’t you read anything? Greenbay most all-time championships? Since when? Big picture…Dallas has won more playoff games been to more Superbowls than ANY other team at 8 and ties for Winning the most Superbowls of any team. That would be 5. Greenbay has won 3 and been 4….lets see…8 to 4…hmmm..5 to 3….hmmmmm…I’m seeing a pattern here…Now, Congratulations…you don’t like THE Dallas Cowboys, America’s Team. Scamper off and play nice now. Let the Big BOYS Take care of business now. They have a LOT of fans to take care of. (Its only fitting that the Cowboys new stadium will be the freakin ENVY of every team in the league! A stadium fit for AMERICA’S TEAM!)

March 5, 2007 at 12:26 pm
(39) Claud says:

Oh..and by the way…longevity…America’s Team since the 1970’s..That ties right into popularity…As for performance.. well…you know the rest.

(42) Bill Parcells says:

The Cowboys are America’s Team and those who suggest otherwise not open to the truth of the matter. In fact, most who oppose the Cowboys use of America’s Team seem to argue from a perspective of envy and hatred, and that is proof that they thinking clearly. I am not a Cowboys fan, but I live in NY and know that there are more Cowboys fans here than Jets fans and almost as many as Giants fans. Its all theatre. The NFL needs the Dallas Cowboys to be good, because its good for the league. Its widely known, and there is no other team in the NFL that the league wants to be successful. The Cowboys are villians to many, and heros to many more. The league is more interesting when the Cowboys are good. The very notion that people either hate them or love them is proof in itself of their power. People denounce them because of their insecurities; I guess it makes them feel as if their own team is illegitmate, but it doesn’t. Again, its all theatre-its all drama. Don’t take it so litereally-it makes you seem simple-minded.

April 15, 2007 at 2:05 pm
(43) john says:

The Cowboys are a very popular team but also a very disliked team. The most popular team in America is the ittsburgh Steelers. SB XL was a home game for the Steelers. Also, they sell more merchandise than any other team. Also, the Steelers fan base is strong anywhere they travel.

June 13, 2007 at 7:01 pm
(44) Claud says:

And greenbay won those when? back before Dallas had a team? The fact still remains, the Cowboys capture more audiences than any other team. Period. No matter what team people claim, more people flip over to see how the Cowboys are doing. Love them, Hate them, they still get the respect. And lets not forget, the Cowboys didn’t name themselves that. They didn’t even want the name. Somehow, it stuck. And oh look. How many years later and they are still called America’s Team. Agree or not, they are America’s Team. Like it or not you will still turn on the T.V. and hear “America’s Team” and know that the Cowboys are playing. They are now and will remain AMERICA’S TEAM!

nuff said.

First: I’m not a Cowboy fan..
Second: It seems about 95% of above comments support the Cowboys lustrous byname..
Third: On said 95%, I’m sure they are not ALL Dallas fans but still agree with the moniker AMERICA’S TEAM…

So please spare us all the regurgitated attitude from envious fans of less favored teams.

And my final thought, being that they are the favored team of the rest of the planet, perhaps it was they who inspired the label.

August 7, 2007 at 7:05 pm
(47) Ben says:

I guess “America’s team” is what we have here then. Whiney coaches who quit because of self centered players moaning about one thing or another. Work ethic that comes from the ghetto’s of Dallas for sure. What we have here is disgruntled fans saying that the Cowboys are America’s team, as far as I am concerned they don’t represent anything that I care for and they are not the only team that has done anything for the game of football. Calling them America’s team is the mistake of calling all facial tissue Kleenex, they got branded something its NOT!!!

August 10, 2007 at 3:45 pm
(48) cris says:

the name didn’t always come with nice things, you think cowboys loved it at first at all?

cowboys deserve the name because they are sticking with it now. win or lose, for those only like the name onlybbecause they win, they don’t worth the name.

One big reason that the Cowboys have more nationally televised games this year than anyone else including the Patriots, Steelers and Colts, is because television networks know more people watch the Cowboys.

There are way more reasons the Cowboys are America’s team than they arent. You guys keep asking for reasons they are, and everybody’s giving them… (and a lot of good ones) Well hey guys, give us a reason they aren’t! A good one!

Just to contribute to why the Cowboys are America’s team:

THE DALLAS COWBOY CHEERLEADERS!!!

Think about it. Did you even know any other team HAD cheerleaders?

Who cares! I know that has nothing to do with theyre ability on the field, its just one of their claims to fame.

4 and 0 BABY! Go Cowboys!!

America’s team??? Those drug loving, cheerleading gawking, 5 year old boy killing (father killed son because he kept getting in front of the TV when the cokeboys were playing), brothels around texas stadium, texans full of themselves, emmitt smith taking a 100 more carries then payton to break his rushing record. Yeah right America’s Team. Sorry to burst your bubble but Green Bay, Chicago and the Giants all have more championships then the cokeboys. Yes championships. The Super Bowl used to be called the Championship Game. The NFL was around way before the cokeboys.

Two words Jim
PROVE IT!

Is that why Cowboys merchandise outsells every other team’s?

Or let’s also consider who has a more winning record in their franchise history… Um it’s not New England.

Give it up dude. Come back after several decades of dynasty New England teams and then your argument could be valid.

(75) Steve Prefontaine says:

The Dallas Cowboys are America’s Team, because the definite descriptive “America’s Team” refers to the Dallas Cowboys. Similarly, Deion Sanders is Prime Time because the definite descriptive “Prime Time” refers to Deion Sanders. This doesn’t mean Deion Sanders is the time of day designated as prime for anything. Nor does the fact that the Dallas Cowboys are America’s Team mean that they are really THE team belonging to America. In fact there are several American teams; 32 in the NFL alone.

Just because we all call the Cowboys “America’s Team” does not mean that a person who likes the Green Bay Packers better, for example, is not an American.

Of course all this is not to take away from the fact that the Cowboys have traditionally been a great team, and certainly it is possible that they are the most popular team in the United States. Yet neither this nor their collection of accolades will make them America’s Team. What makes them America’s Team is the fact that everyone understands “America’s Team” to mean “the Dallas Cowboys”.

It would, however, be interesting to see an accurate poll on the topic of team popularity. I know ESPN had their poll, but I’d think a Gallup poll might be more reliable. Even so I would not be surprised if the Cowboys came out on top.

Look for similarities between how the Packers respond defensively to Detroit’s passing attack and how they play against Dallas. On the offensive side watch for how Favre, a quarterback who has historically struggled to find his rhythm in domes, looks against Detroit to indicate how he might play in Dallas. My guess is that GB will not have a chance against Dallas if they lose to Detroit. Either way I want to see GB face NE. America’s Team had their chance already.

I don’t think the majority of the population needs to support any franchise for it to be referred to as “America’s Team.” So before I support my point, I think your entire argument is moot. I think the term more or less indicates the phenomenon of the general population’s INTEREST or KNOWLEDGE, of the franchise, not necessarily whether people “like” or “dislike” the franchise. I think the Cowboys have on average been, and arguably, continue to be, the most storied and followed team in the league-i.e., “the soap opera that is the Dallas Cowboys.” I think their image is distinctly American and reflects American values. From the Team name to the Cheerleaders, the Dallas Cowboys are distinctly American. Also,I may be mistaken, but I believe the Cowboys outsell every other franchise in paraphernalia and, on average, generate the highest national TV ratings during the regular season. Specifically, I believe the number one selling jersey from April to October is Tony Romo, not Brett Favre or Tom Brady, who are currently the most established and credible NFL QB superstars. Additionally, the team has had to reschedule at least 3 games this season (moving the game from the early to late game) in order for these games to be accessible to different time zones, in effect making the game a “national” in coverage. I believe these facts clearly support the designation you question. Indeed, the NFL markets the team as “America’s Team” and at the end of th day, the total NFL marketed product significantly influences the determination of how teams are identified-not the fans.

(78) PreTjenE says:

America’s Team is a term often used to describe the Dallas Cowboys franchise that plays in the NFC East of the National Football League.[1] The term is recognized and often used by media outlets, including ESPN [2] and Yahoo! [3] .

Bob Ryan, the Vice President and editor-in-chief of NFL Films, coined this for the Cowboys in 1979. After preparing and editing the team’s 1978 season highlight film he had to come up with a title for the film.[4] He was quoted as saying:

“I wanted to come up with a different twist on their team highlight film. I noticed then, and had noticed earlier, that wherever the Cowboys played, you saw people in the stands with Cowboys jerseys and hats and pennants. Plus, they were always the national game on television.”
Drawing upon this inspiration and that of other nationally followed sports teams, such as the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in college football and the Boston Celtics in pro basketball, which Ryan said “are all America’s teams,” he decided to use America’s Team as the name of the highlight film.

During the Cowboys’ first game of the 1979 season, a nationally televised game against the St. Louis Cardinals (which Dallas won 22-21), the television announcer introduced the Cowboys as America’s Team and the nickname stuck.

Dallas’ Hall of Fame coach Tom Landry originally did not approve of the appellation. He felt that it would give opposing teams extra incentive to play harder. Eventually he gave in and actually came to like the name.[5]

In 2003, NFL Films released a DVD collection chronicling the Dallas Cowboys franchise entitled The Dallas Cowboys: The Complete History of America’s Team 1960-2003.

High ratings could just as easily be interpreted as interest in the Packers, or Brett FaVRe or in a great football game. What else would you expect from a game that’s supposed to produce the NFC’s answer to the Patriots? (At any rate I highly doubt the NFC conference game will feature a re-match of these two teams)

Go Missouri!

Of course, the Cowboys/Packers game will be shown on NFL Network which apparently is not carried on Charter or Time Warner..so that might have an effect on ratings outside of the Green Bay, Milwaukee, and Dallas viewing areas (which have permission to broadcast the game on local stations).

You need to find out the Dallas Cowboys are called America’s team before you say anything about it. It has nothing to with the number of fans. If you do some research you will find that a part of the team was owned by the American government and that is why they are referred to as America’s team. Besides the fact that they are the most liked team in the world of football. You can find proof of all this on the internet in case you want to see for your self

I agree with James, Dallas is not ‘America’s Team.’. They may think so, but that may be true for Texas, maybe.

I would think Green Bay is closest because they do not put up with the type of player scandals found on other teams like the Cowbiys, are community owned and supported in so many ways and not open to corporate blackmail by owners such was seen in Baltimore, Houston, and Cleveland.

The Packers are about fair play and community centeredness. They are what Americans would like to become.

Either way, they rack up the numbers and that’s how they got to be and will always be America’s Team. Cowboys even seem to revel in being hated. Having been born in Texas and lived in most areas of the US I can understand the rivalry that goes on within the NFL amoungst players and fans, but at its most basic level FOOTBALL is a business like any other. I don’t hear anyone fighting for IBM, AT&T, or any other corporation as the “AMERICAN COMPANY”. They are owned and controlled by an individual or corporation … with the exception of one.

Like it or not the Green Bay Packers are the only team that is owned by the city they represent. They fill their stadium and many others with their fans everytime they play and have waiting list for those fans who want to get season tickets. And the amazing thing is that it never changes. It doesn’t matter if you’re talking about the days of Vince Lombardi, the less then spectacular period after that or the era with Bret Farve, the packer fans have always backed their team.

As for the previous comments about the Dallas Cowboys being the team on everyones lips, even those overseas, it is usually right after the Green Bay Packers … like it or not!!

For the record, the Cowboys did not invent, nor were they the first to use the shotgun formation. In fact they were almost a decade behind the 49’s, which is the trend even to this day.

As for America’s team, its a name given as a publicity stunt by a media man. The team doesn’t claim it, the vast majority of sporting fans don’t claim it, the best the Cowboy fanboys can hope for is that if they say it enough it will be true.

And for the record, the Green Bay Packers have a broader appeal than do the Cowboys. Strange how more Americans can relate to eating brats and drinking brew compared to sneaking up on sheep. Is it true that cowboys wear button fly’s because sheep can hear a zipper at 200 yards? You wanna know why TO has such good hands… Its because sheep are fast. Wanna know why Barber is so good at shaking tackles… Its because border collies have a mean bite.

Yeah, I can’t stand the Cowboys, but I gotta admit, they are good (so long as their parole officer is within site).

Dispite playing .333 ball, they still were the top seller in merchandise in the league over the 3 year period. They are the most popular team in the NFL. They are dispised because people are annoyed about how many fans they have. Lets face it, the star on the helmet fills the bill. The Steelers have no flair. They are boring. What is a Steeler!? Its not even a word? What is it? A verb? Is it in Webster’s dictionary? Is it a person who works with steel? Pittsburgh is a joke. No charisma or personality. By the way is Harrison in jail yet?
