Sunday August 31, 2003
Pittsburgh Steelers standout linebacker Joey Porter was one of six people shot early Sunday outside a bar following the Colorado-Colorado State football game. According to Associated Press reports, Porter was shot in the left buttock and the bullet lodged in his right thigh. One of the victims in the shooting, 28-year-old Christopher Wilford, died from his wounds. Porter's injuries were not considered life threatening.
Police spokesman Sonny Jackson told reporters the attacker fired from outside a fenced-in parking lot where the victims were standing just before 2 a.m. No arrests have been made at this time.
Head coach Bill Cowher refused to speculate on how long Porter would be sidelined, but said he would not be put on injured reserve at this time.
