Henson Giving Up On Baseball
Monday September 1, 2003
ESPN's Len Pasquarelli reports New York Yankees' prospect and ex-Michigan quarterback Drew Henson has decided to trade in his pinstriped dreams for shoulder pads and a playbook. After struggling in two full seasons in the minors, Henson racked up more strikeouts than hits and appeared to be a long way away from being ready to play in "The House That Ruth Built". According to reports, he was becoming increasingly frustrated and is now ready to walk away from the guaranteed $12 million that remains on his Yankees contract.
The Houston Texans are looking quite shrewd for risking a sixth-round draft pick on Henson in the 2003 NFL Draft, although he could elect to not sign and re-enter the draft in 2004. With David Carr entrenched as the starter, I would look for the Texans to try to trade him for a high draft pick. Had he not chosen baseball when his career as a Wolverine ended, Henson would have likely been a top-ten draft pick.
