Jamal Lewis Sets New Rushing Record
Sunday September 14, 2003
During a phone call with Cleveland Browns linebacker Andra Davis earlier in the week, Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis said he would break the NFL single-game rushing record if head coach Brian Billick would allow him to carry the ball 30 times. Well, Billick gave him exactly 30 carries and Lewis delivered on his promise by erupting for 295 yards, breaking the record of 278 set by Cincinnati Bengals running back Corey Dillon during the 2000 season.
Lewis ran 82-yards for a touchdown on the second play from scrimmage, added a 63-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and would have cracked the 300 yard mark had a 60-yard run in the first half not been called back because of a holding penalty.
