Porcher: Emmitt Overstayed His Welcome
Friday October 10, 2003
Detroit Lions defensive end Robert Porcher told the Detroit Free Press that running back Emmitt Smith should have hung up his cleats at the end of last season instead of joining the hapless Arizona Cardinals.
"I think he's overstayed his welcome," Porcher said. "It doesn't make me feel sad. That's the problem most players have. Most players, especially great players, have a hard time saying, 'Good-bye.' Most of us have been doing this since we were little kids."
The numbers seem to add some validity to what Porcher says. Through five games, Smith has scored just one touchdown and is averaging a measly 38.4 yards per game on the ground. He is averaging just 3.0 yards per carry, 1.2 yards per carry under his career average, and his best game this season produced a paltry 64 yards.
Maybe it is time for Emmitt to fade away before he further tarnishes what has been one of the greatest careers by any running back to every lace on the shoulder pads.
