Fisher Jabs Jags With 'Chopping' Comments
Tuesday October 21, 2003
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio has taken a lot of heat for placing an oak stump and ax in the Jaguars locker room as a motivational reminder to his players to ''keep choppin' wood'' after a slow start. The move was considered a bit hokie by many around the league, especially after punter Chris Hanson accidentally gashed his right leg while swinging the ax.
The stump and ax have been removed from the Jaguars' locker room, and the incident had begun to fade into the it-seemed-like-a-good-idea-at-the-time file. That is, until Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher decided to poke a little fun at his division rivals.
During his weekly press conference, Fisher was asked about his team's mindset with two of the next three games against Jacksonville. After all the normal cliché coach talk, he just couldn't resist adding with a smile, ''The big thing for us this week is that we just keep chopping wood''.
