Double Standard - Part II
Thursday October 23, 2003
Does anyone else find it troubling that certain individuals in the NFL can make racist comments with barely a blink of an eye by the general public, but another man can have his career destroyed for making somewhat similar statements simply because of the color of his skin? Why is it that everyone is quick to vilify Rush Limbaugh for implying that the media is racist in their treatment of black quarterbacks, but when Warren Sapp calls a white NFL commissioner "slave master" and Junior Seau says "Just kind of give him (LaDainian Thomlinson) a couple of watermelons, load him up with some fried chicken", it's simply shrugged off as a boys-will-be-boys thing?
Of the three comments, Limbaugh's were probably the least racist, yet the guy was forced out of a job because of his words. Just imagine the reaction if Limbaugh had suggested we feed a black man watermelon and fried chicken or referred to black football players as slaves. Am I the only one that sees a double standard here?
