Spurrier Losing Control?

Thursday October 23, 2003
A couple days ago, I mentioned that the honeymoon between Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and Steve Spurrier was over and there was a distinct possibility that the head coach would give up the D.C. coaching gig at the end of the season. And after the events of the last few days, it appears preliminary divorce proceedings may be in the works.

In a Tuesday morning meeting, reportedly attended by Spurrier, special teams coach Mike Stock was telling defensive lineman Ladairis Jackson what he did right and what he did wrong on a play in their game at Buffalo last Sunday. Finally, one of the Redskins players informed Stock that Jackson was not in attendance in the meeting and had, in fact, been cut from the team. The Redskins say that Spurrier was informed of the decision, but if that's the case, I have to wonder why he didn't cut Stock off (and maybe inform him) when he started analyzing the play of a guy that was no longer on the team?

Further fueling speculation of Spurrier's demise is the mid-season hiring of special consultants Foge Fazio and Joe Bugel. The Fazio signing is somewhat understandable since he is a defensive guy, although bringing in a "consultant" in the middle of the season is a bit unorthodox. But bringing in Bugel as an offensive consultant is a slap at the very big ego of the 'Ol Ball Coach. And while you can never have too many good minds working together, offense is Spurrier's baby and supposedly his area of expertise.

Since the hirings, Spurrier has made it clear that it was not his idea to bring in the consultants. Instead, it was sprung on him by Snyder and Vice President of Player Personnel Vinny Cerrato.

So, unless the Redskins make a drastic turnaround over the second half of the season, especially on offense, it appears that a parting of the ways in the nation's capital is imminent.
