Bruce Record Chase Sacked?
Tuesday November 4, 2003
Despite having produced virtually nothing on the football field this season, 40-year old Washington Redskins defensive end Bruce Smith is miffed because he feels his playing time was unfairly limited in Sunday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
"I want to know what their intentions are," said Smith, according to Associated Press reports. "I have goals that I'd like to achieve for myself, team goals and individual goals. At some point and time in your career, you have to take a stand and be a little selfish."
Along with the displeasure in his reduced role, Smith may have also revealed the real reason he continues to hang on despite seriously declining skills. It appears he is not as concerned with what he can do for the Redskins as he is with what the Redskins can do for him.
Smith is just two sacks behind Reggie White's career record, but in eight games this season, he has produced just 1½ sacks. With his diminishing playing time, Smith may feel his shot at the record is slipping away. And the fact that the team appears headed down the toilet is increasingly frustrating for the future hall of famer who feels he deserves every chance to reach his goal.
Unfortunately, this is not the attitude that is going to help turn around this club's fortunes. If the Redskins hope to turn this ship around, they need guys that want to win. And if Smith is more concerned with personal accolades than wins and losses, then Daniel Snyder should ask him to clean out his locker sooner rather than later.
