BCS or Just BS?

Sunday December 7, 2003
Let me get this straight!

The USC Trojans entered the weekend ranked No. 2 in the BCS standings. They soundly beat the Oregon State Beavers while No. 1 Oklahoma was getting spanked by Kansas State. And despite the fact that they are now ranked No. 1 in both the AP and UPI poll, they've dropped to third in the BCS rankings and will not be invited to play for a National Championship in the Sugar Bowl?

Is it just me, or is there something wrong with this picture?

This year's BCS fiasco is sure to renew cries (rightfully so) for some type of playoff system in college football to determine a true National Champion, instead of this fictitious championship that exists today.

It just amazes me how the NCAA continues to miss the boat with this BCS crap. The fans want to see a true National Champion. They don't want a computer to determine it for them. Haven't the-powers-that-be in college football noticed the success their counterparts with the round orange ball have in March with their tournament? Haven't they caught on to the madness created by their single-elimination tournament?

Ideally, a playoff system would include the top eight teams and utilize the current bowl system, but I think most fans would be content with a four-team playoff. And if there was ever a season that a four-team playoff would fit perfectly, it's this year. With LSU and Oklahoma playing in the Sugar Bowl and USC taking on Michigan in the Rose Bowl, it would be so simple and so much more meaningful for the winners of these two contests to meet at a future date to settle things once and for all.

But this is NCAA football we're talking about, so it's likely we will continue to see our champions determined by a computer instead of by the players on the field. And we will continue to be fed the 20-something odd Bowl Games annually that have little-to-no meaning other than to generate a little (okay, a lot) of cash for all involved.
