The Spending Spree Begins

Thursday March 4, 2004
The free agent signing period got off to a blazing start Wednesday with a flurry of activity which started, surprisingly, with the Philadelphia Eagles' signing of defensive end Jevon Kearse. The former Tennessee Titan, who is expected to provide the pass rush that was lost when Hugh Douglas left for Jacksonville last off-season, signed an eight-year, $66 million contract that includes a $16 million signing bonus.

Not to be outdone, the Washington Redskins agreed to a six-year, $30 million deal with Seattle Seahawks cornerback Shawn Springs, which includes a $10 million signing bonus. They also reached an agreement with unrestricted free agent defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin on a six-year contract worth $25.5 million that includes an $8 million signing bonus.

Other notable moves Wednesday include:

• The Miami Dolphins acquired quarterback A.J. Feeley from the Philadelphia Eagles for a 2005 second-round draft pick.
• The Green Bay Packers re-signed tackle Chad Clifton to a multi-year contract.
• The Chicago Bears agreed to terms on a four-year contract with running back Thomas Jones and signed quarterback Jonathan Quinn to a two-year contract. Linebacker Warrick Holdman was released while fullback Stanley Pritchett was re-signed to a one-year contract.
• The Houston Texans reached an agreement with former Dolphins right tackle Todd Wade on a five-year contract that is worth $25 million and includes a $10 million signing bonus.
• The Arizona Cardinals re-signed tight end Lorenzo Diamond to a one-year contract.
• The Atlanta Falcons re-signed center Todd McClure to a one-year contract.
• The Buffalo Bills released tight end Dave Moore.
• The New Orleans Saints re-signed cornerback Fakhir Brown to a two-year contract and re-signed linebacker Derrick Rodgers to a three-year contract.
• The Washington Redskins re-signed guard/center Lennie Friedman.
• The New York Jets released linebacker Marvin Jones
• The New England Patriots re-signed wide receiver J.J. Stokes.
• The Detroit Lions re-signed defensive end James Hall to a five-year contract and released safety Corey Harris.
• The San Diego Chargers re-signed center David Binn to a five-year contract.
