NFL Halts Sale of Tillman Jerseys
Wednesday May 5, 2004
Former Arizona Cardinals safety Pat Tillman, who was tragically killed recently while serving in the Army Rangers in Afghanistan, was probably not on the priority list of most memorabilia collectors before his death. The general public's recognition of him as a national hero, however, has sparked dollar signs in the eyes of many holding anything sporting his likeness or signature.
No doubt the really unscrupulous are even passing off counterfeit Tillman merchandise simply to make a quick profit off the untimely passing of a rare individual. A quick search on eBay Wednesday morning netted a list of 373 items, including everything from photographs for just a few bucks to jerseys going for as much as $400.
In light of all this, kudos should go out to the NFL, which actually halted the sale of all licensed Pat Tillman jerseys.
"Our hope is that anyone attempting to personally profit from Pat Tillman's legacy will immediately cease and desist," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in a statement released to reporters.
The league has told its jersey licensees not to sell Tillman's Cardinals No. 40 jersey "in an effort not to cash in on the tragedy".
