Ricky Retiring
Sunday July 25, 2004
"I just don't want to be in this business anymore."
With those words to Miami Herald reporter Dan Le Batard, Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams shocked the world of football with his intentions to officially retire from the NFL early this week.
"I'm finally free. I can't remember ever being this happy", he told the paper after indicating that his heart is just not in the game and he has no desire to play football. Instead, he wants to travel the world and is tired of the demands and restraints of playing in the NFL.
Williams timing delivered a serious blow to the Dolphins, who are scheduled to report to training camp on Friday, leaving a gaping hole in the offensive backfield. At this time, it appears Miami will be forced to use a running back-by-committee style with Travis Minor likely getting the lion's share of the carries.
However, specultaion has already begun about the possibility that the 'Phins will swing a deal involving disgruntled defensive end Adewale Ogunleye. Names that have been thrown out there by various sources include the Bears' Anthony Thomas, Buffalo's Travis Henry, and any one of several Minnesota Vikings backs.
The Dolphins could also hope to snag some help when training camp cuts begin, but it's not likely they will find a treasure in another team's trash. The best they are likely to do by picking up a player in this fashion is to find someone to share the load with Minor.
