Randy Moss Traded to Raiders

Wednesday February 23, 2005
After weeks of speculation, the Minnesota Vikings have agreed to trade enigmatic wide receiver Randy Moss to the Oakland Raiders, a franchise that has been the eventual destination of many NFL malcontents and misfits over the years. The St. Paul Pioneer Press was told Wednesday by Moss' agent, Dante DiTrapano, that a deal sending Moss to the Raiders for starting linebacker Napoleon Harris, the seventh overall pick in the upcoming draft and a seventh round pick in an undisclosed future draft, is a done deal, but it cannot be officially announced until the March 2 opening of the free-agent signing period.

The acquisition of Moss is a bit puzzling considering the Raiders just inked their own free agent wideout, Jerry Porter, to a long-term deal and Ronald Curry appeared to be coming into his own before his season ended prematurely because of injury. And with the Moss signing, the Raiders really don't have a lot of cap space to address the defense, which just lost its fastest linebacker.

If Oakland can pick up a solid option at running back, their offense should be wide open this year, but who on defense is going to get the ball back for the offense? Unless the Raiders pull off a couple more deals to bring in some defensive help, I suspect Moss and Porter will be spending a lot of time on the sidelines watching opposing offenses march up and down the field.

The announcement by Moss' agent sent shockwaves through the football world, as a trade of this magnitude should, including our own football forum. And there are plenty of views being shared by fans of all teams.

  • "You would think the Vikings could have recieved a lot more then Napolean Harris, the 7th overall pick and a 7th round pick for one of the biggest impact players in the NFL. Harris is a pretty good linebacker and is still young but isn't the impact defensive player the Vikings wanted. The 7th overall pick in the draft is nice. But a 7th rounder? Come on, I would think the Vikes could at least have recieved a third or a fourth rounder." -- Read discussion...

  • "Jerry Porter and Randy Moss together will make a sick combination. I think they will be one of, if not the most feared wideouts in the game. Now if only the Raiders had a decent defense." --Read discussion...
