Merriman Deal Comes as a Surprise
Monday August 1, 2005
In a surprising turn of events, first-round draft pick Shawne Merriman has agreed to terms with the San Diego Chargers on a five-year, $11.33 million contract with $9 million guaranteed. Many thought this had the makings of a bitter, drawn-out process that could lead into the regular season, but not so, says the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Merriman himself even showed a bit of surprise, telling the Union-Tribune, "I'm kind of speechless right now. I really didn't believe it was going to get done this soon. I'm more anxious to get out there than I have ever been."
The flap between Merriman and the Chargers began back in May when the former Maryland linebacker refused to participate in offseason workouts because of concerns that San Diego's front office might not negotiate in good faith should he be injured while not under contract.
Top 15 draft picks who still remain unsigned include RB Ronnie Brown (Mia), WR Braylon Edwards (Cle), RB Cedric Benson (Chi), CB Adam 'Pacman' Jones (Ten), CB Antrel Rolle (Arz), and CB Carlos Rogers (Was).
