Irvin Arrested; Could Doom '06 HOF Selection
Sunday November 27, 2005
Former Dallas Cowboys superstar Michael Irvin can probably kiss what little chance he had of being elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 goodbye after his latest run-in with law enforcement officials. According to Associated Press reports, the former wide receiver was pulled over for speeding in Plano, Texas, on Friday afternoon, and was allegedly found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. Specifics on the type of paraphernalia found was not available. (join discussion)
Irvin was recently listed as one of the 25 semi-finalists for Hall of Fame selection in 2006. And a strong case can be made based on his career numbers and championships, although enshrinement in just his second year of eligibility might have been a little out of reach thanks somewhat to his off-field history.
Irvin has a history of problems with drugs, having pleaded no contest to felony cocaine possession in exchange for four years of deferred probation, a $10,000 fine and dismissal of misdemeanor marijuana possession charges in 1996. That alone is enough to cost him a few votes in the final cut, although many voters, prior to this latest incident, may have given him the benefit of the doubt under the assumption that his drug habits were a thing of the past. But this latest brush with the law is probably enough to sufficiently sour voters, pushing his induction back to at least 2007.
Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman and perennial All-Pro defensive end Reggie White head a list of 25 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
