Texans Taking a Dive?

Tuesday December 13, 2005
I'm not normally one who readily subscribes to conspiracy theories, but I'm beginning to rethink my position as it pertains to the Houston Texans. Following the second of the club's late-game meltdowns during weeks 12 and 13, in which the team seemingly had the game in hand each time, the thought crossed my mind that perhaps someone on the Texans really, really likes USC tailback Reggie Bush (who doesn't?) and will do just about anything to secure the right to draft him... assuming, of course, he gives up his final year of college eligibility.

Then I witnessed the pathetic 31-yard field goal attempt, a mere chip shot by professional standards, by Kris Brown this past Sunday that would have sent the team's contest with the Tennessee Titans into overtime, and the wheels started turning again. Is this self destruction on a routine basis simply the result a very bad team and a little coincidence? Or are there ulterior motives behind these weekly collapses? (Join the discussion)

This wasn't just a simple missed kick. It wasn't a mishandled snap or a botched hold. It was, though, perhaps the most lame, revolting attempt I have ever witnessed at the professional level. I can't say for a fact it was intentional, but man, it was certainly ugly. There's no denying that.

Bush is considered by many to be a special player, and there's a good chance the Texans would select him with the first overall pick even though they already have a pretty good back in Dominick Davis. Davis is a solid player, although I'm not convinced he will ever be a premier back in the league. But Bush is a game changer who would bring the explosive element of being a threat to score every time he touches the ball.

Bush is just one of those players you don't pass up unless you already have a LaDainian Thomlinson in your backfield. The Texans would take him. The 49ers wouldn't let the presence of Kevan Barlow and Frank Gore stop them from picking him. And the Packers certainly won't allow the short-term success of Samkon Gado to dissuade them from taking a player who has been compared to some of the icons of NFL history.

But is a team willing to lose on purpose to make it happen? Are the Texans that team? Join the discussion...
