Clarett in Hot Water Again
Sunday January 1, 2006
Running back Maurice Clarett, who was a third-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos in 2005, may be in trouble with the law again. According to Associated Press reports, the former Ohio State Buckeye allegedly used a gun to rob two people in an alley behind a bar in Columbus, Ohio early Sunday.
According to reports, Clarett, who got away with only a cell phone, fled the scene in a white sports utility vehicle when the club's owner, who recognized him, entered the alley. A warrant has been issued for his arrest on two counts of aggravated robbery.
Clarett, who rushed for 1,237 yards and helped Ohio State to a national championship as a freshman in 2002, was suspended from the Ohio State football team after an investigation determined he broke NCAA rules and lied to investigators. He later sued the NFL for early admission to the draft, but after originally being awarded a victory at the district court level, the verdict was overturned and Clarett was forced to wait until 2005 to join the NFL.
The Broncos surprised a lot of people by selecting Clarett in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft, but cut him before the regular season began amid reports of alcohol consumption in the team's weight room.
