Bengals' Receiver Arrested Again
Monday January 30, 2006
Just days after gun charges were expanded against Redskins' safety Sean Taylor, another NFL play has been arrested on similar charges. Cincinnati Bengals' wide receiver Chris Henry, who is already facing charges for marijuana possession, was arrested in Orlando Florida early Saturday for allegedly pointing a firearm at a group of people.
In this latest incident, according to WCPO in Cincinnati, Henry is being charged with possession of a concealed firearm, improper exhibition of a firearm, and aggravated assault with a firearm.
The police report (pdf) indicates a group involving Henry was involved in an altercation with another group and appeared that a fight was about to break out. A police officer had stopped at the scene because a limo was blocking traffic. And when he attempted to break up the parties, Henry allegedly flashed a 9mm Luger at the other group. When ordered to drop the gun, Henry tossed it inside the limo, later denying ever possessing it.
Now, keeping in mind the whole innocent-until-proven-guilty thing, I have to wonder how many brain cells Henry exerted during this particular altercation. The Taylor case has given recent publicity to the stringent gun laws in Florida that could net the second-year player 46 years in the state pen. With that news splashed all over the media this past week, you'd think Henry might be a little cautions in whipping out his piece. But was does he do? He waits until a cop is on the scene before doing his best Dirty Harry imitation. Brilliant!
And given the recent tripling of Taylor's gun charges because his incident allegedly involved three victims, Henry and his attorneys should be quite concerned. The prosecutor in Henry's case may very well do the same thing. And considering Henry's incident apparently involved a group of people, the charges could be multiplied a half dozen times or more, meaning Henry might not see the outside of a prison until long after his ability to play football at a professional level is gone.
