Rumors have been floating around the internet recently suggesting a pair of veteran receivers, Cincinnati’s Chad Johnson and Denver’s Ashley Lelie, are on the trading block. But from where I'm sitting, there’s no reason to believe there is any truth to the story where either is involved.
Johnson was said to be on the outs with Bengals’ head coach Marvin Lewis following a rumored scuffle in the team’s locker room at halftime of their playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. For the record, both sides have denied any physical altercation occurred. But even if there were, it just doesn’t make sense for the Bengals to move one of the league’s top wideouts. Johnson can be a distraction with his trash talking, but the Bengals can’t afford to lose him, especially now that the future of Chris Henry is up in the air. It just doesn’t make sense for Cincinnati.
As far as the Lelie rumors go, Broncos’ head coach Mike Shanahan told the Denver Post Monday that there’s nothing to the claims.
"Of course they are not true, of course," Shanahan told the Post. "This is the time of year all kinds of crazy things are said."
So if you have hopes of your favorite club landing either of these guys in the off season, it’s probably not likely.
