Free Agent Report

Wednesday March 8, 2006
With this year's free agent signing period being held up by ongoing CBA negotiations, there are still players who can be signed right now --like recently released WR Isaac Bruce-- and plenty of rumors floating around regarding those who will become available once the NFL opens the doors on 2006.

Bruce, who was released on Monday, has already been tied to three teams, the most obvious being the Detroit Lions who recently hired Bruce's former head coach, Mike Martz, as their offensive coordinator. It doesn't really make sense in my opinion considering the money Bruce is looking for and what the Lions already have invested at the position. The Texans and Redskins have also been mentioned as possible suitors. Both of those clubs, however, face cap restrictions, especially if the CBA isn't extended.

In other free agent news:
  • Mark Bartelstein, agent for recently released Jets center Kevin Mawae, told the Philadelphia Daily News he has spoken with the Eagles about his client. The Eagles, however, are also rumored to be interested in the Saints LeCharles Bentley, but they must wait until the signing period opens to pursue him. Mawae is scheduled to meet with the Dolphins on Wednesday.

  • Former Redskins linebacker Lavar Arrington said in an ESPN Radio interview that he wants to stay in the NFC East but preferably not with the Cowboys. Both the Eagles and the Giants have needs at outside linebacker, so either party might be interested.

  • The Tampa Tribune says the Buccaneers are likely to release quarterback Brian Griese and try to re-sign him at a reduced price. Griese, however, will most likely test the market before considering a return.

  • Released Broncos defensive end Trevor Pryce visited the Browns on Tuesday, says the Cleveland Plains Dealer.
