Broncos, 49ers Swap Picks; NFL Mock Draft Updated

Wednesday April 19, 2006
It never fails. I'm in the middle of updating the latest version of my NFL mock draft when word comes in of a key injury to a top prospect or a trade that shakes up the entire process. Why should this year be any different?

On Tuesday, as I put the finishing touches on one of the final updates of the mock draft season, the NFL announced an exchange of draft picks that sent me back to the drawing board. Reportedly, the San Francisco 49ers will get the Denver Broncos' second pick in the first round, No. 22 overall, in exchange for the 49ers second (No. 37) and third-round picks (No. 68).

The move could mean the 49ers have their eye on either an outside linebacker, cornerback, or tight end late in the first round. In my view, this gives them the option of taking Maryland tight end Vernon Davis with the No. 6 pick and their choice of Florida State's Ernie Sims, Ohio State's Bobby Carpenter, UTEP's Thomas Howard, or Alabama's DeMeco Ryans with their newly-acquired pick. Or they could hold off until the second pick for UCLA's Marcedes Lewis or Georgia's Leonard Pope, and take Texas defensive back Michael Huff with their first pick.

I'm thinking the first scenario is the more likely of the two and my latest update reflects such. About Football's 2006 NFL Mock Draft projects the first two rounds of the upcoming draft. Read more... and feel free to comment below!
