More on Big Ben

Tuesday June 13, 2006
After seven hours of surgery on Monday to repair the facial damage caused when he was launched head first from his Suzuki Hayabusa into the windshield of a Chrysler New Yorker, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger remains in serious but stable condition. Although he did suffer multiple facial fractures, including a broken jaw, there was a bit of good news regarding his condition. He didn't suffer any serious damage to his knees.

Also, in a new twist to the story, KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh reported Tuesday morning that Roethlisberger does not possess a license to operate a motorcycle. According to their sources, he did have a learner's permit that allowed him to ride a motorcycle, but it had expired on March 29th, which means he was driving illegally when the accident occurred.

Fantasy Impact: The good news on Roethlisberger's knees is a relief. But, despite the fact that the Post-Gazette says he will be ready to go on opening day, he's still a risk to miss some action this year. The severity of his facial injuries has to be a concern considering the number of hits a quarterback takes over the course of the season. Because of the Steelers' offensive philosophy, Roethlisberger wasn't an elite fantasy QB to begin with. At this point, he's a risky pick at best.
