Morency More Than Just Fantasy Insurance
If you're looking for a fantasy player who could emerge from deep in Sleeperville, look no further than the Houston Texans. Incumbent starter Dominick Davis is progressing slowly in his rehabilitation from a knee injury, and while he has been on the shelf, his backups have been quite impressive... particularly Vernand Morency.
Morency carried the ball 11 times for 95 yards in Saturday's game against the Rams. He also rushed for two touchdowns, including a 43-yarder in the third quarter. Yeah, it's only one preseason game, but Morency appears to just now be catching on to the one-cut style head coach Gary Kubiak is looking for. Morency's pass protection has improved dramatically as well, which probably gives him the edge over fellow backup Wali Lundy, who has also been impressive in Davis' absence.
As many of you know, I've never been as high on Dominick Davis as most experts are. He's a steady player who has posted more than 3,000 yards rushing over the last three years. But he's adequate at best as a starter, fantasy or otherwise, and I don't believe he will ever be anything more than that. Should Davis' knee problems continue into the regular season (I get the feeling this is worse than the Texans are letting on), I don't think it's too big of a stretch to think Morency just might take the starting job away from him... especially with a couple more games under his belt like his last one.
