Lions Love Them Wideouts

Saturday September 23, 2006
Is Detroit Lions' GM Matt Millen fascinated with troubled, expensive, disappointing wide receivers? I mean, I hate to keep kicking a dead horse, but with rumors of the Lions' interest in acquiring Jerry Porter from the Oakland Raiders, you have to wonder what the heck he's thinking in even entertaining the notion of acquiring this guy. No, there was no trade offer made, but why would Millen even explore the possibility of adding Porter's poor attitude to a team trying to instill a new disciplined approach? Why make that phone call?

Hasn't he seen enough with Charles Rogers, who's still waiting for some team willing to risk the league minimum on him, and Mike Williams, who can't get his fat butt on a football field when it counts? Has Roy Williams not looked like enough of a buffoon over the last week that the team feels it needs to go out and get another?

I realize personnel men have to explore every possibility, but this type of thinking is a perfect example of why the Lions are today's Bengals/Cardinals.

In one respect, however, Porter would make a nice pairing with Roy Williams. Big Roy doesn't care what the score is, and Jerry doesn't pay attention to the game. Sounds like a recipe for success, huh?
