Owens Case Classified as 'Accidental Overdose'

Thursday September 28, 2006
According to Associated Press reports, Dallas police are closing the books on the Terrell Owens case, which has officially been classified as an accidental overdose despite early speculation that the enigmatic Cowboys receiver had tried to kill himself.

Tapes of the initial 9-1-1 call by Owens' publicist, Kim Etheredge, have been released also. However, the transcript of the conversation doesn't shed any more light on the receiver's situation or any conflicts between the police report and Wednesday's press conference. Still in question is how statements attributed to Etheredge telling police officers that Owens was depressed and that she tried to take pills out of his mouth got on the police report.

Further pushing this story into Bizzaro Land was the reaction Thursday of the president of the Dallas Police Association, Senior Cpl. Glenn White, who demanded an apology from T.O. and his publicist.

"The officers reacted because they were called to this location to do this job. Now they're being put under a microscope by some fancy little football person," he said. "Give me a break. Those officers are 10 times better than this man. ... We police officers don't go out to these calls and make stuff up."

First of all, I did get a little kick out of White's "fancy little football person" terminology. I'm thinking that was not part of some sort of prepared statement... for the sake of folks in Dallas, I sure hope not.

The "ten times better than this man" comment was a little juvenile as well for a public official like White. But it makes no sense that the responding officers would fabricate statements on the report. What do they have to gain?

Meanwhile, Owens practiced Thursday with the team, but head coach Bill Parcells is not expected to make a decision on whether he'll suit up for the game against the Titans until the weekend.
