NFL Suspends Merriman for Steroid Use

Monday October 23, 2006
ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen reported Sunday night that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman has been notified he will be suspended for four games for violating the NFL's steroids and related substances policy. Mortensen cites a source with knowledge of the suspension as saying Merriman's positive test was "definitely for steroids… not one of those supplement deals."

Which calls into question pretty much everything Merriman has accomplished since entering the league in 2005. This doesn't appear to be some accidental consumption of Nyquil or something along those lines. It seems he's been caught red-handed. So now his NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award is tainted, along with his Pro Bowl appearance and just about everything he has accomplished in his short pro career. It's a shame what he's done to his image and the perception of everything he has done or will do during his career. I mean, the guy will carry the label of cheater for the foreseeable, right?

His four-game absence couldn't come at a worse time for the defensive unit either. Already out because of injury is defensive end Igor Olshanky, who recently had knee surgery and is expected to miss the next month. Shaun Phillips also went down with a calf injury on Sunday, which leaves the Chargers thin at linebacker. What a huge disappointment this has to be for the Chargers franchise.

I don’t get it. How can anyone even justify letting him play after four weeks? Will the effects of steroid use dissipate in four weeks? How long will it take to shed the bulk put on by taking steroids?

Use of anabolic steroids and other enhancement drugs are illegal and a felony. Use and/or posession/sale can bring 5 years hard time and/or a $250,000 fine. Use continues to be rampant in most pro sports. Great role models. This is not cheating. This is a felonious crime. Drum them all out of sports forever.
