No. 6 Pick Burning Hole in Snyder's Pocket?
First, Snyder tried to flip-flop first-round picks with the Chicago Bears for linebacker Lance Briggs. Now, according to Ryan O'Halloran of the Washington Times, the team is interested in dealing for Samuel. And like the situation with Briggs, the Redskins don't really need a player at Samuel's position. In fact, acquiring Samuel would probably just push Shawn Springs out the door.
It seems Snyder with his No. 6 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft is akin to an eight-year-old with five dollars to spend at the local candy store. The money is just burning a hole in his pocket. And it doesn't matter that the only candy available is the kind little Danny already has in the pantry at home. He wants to spend that five dollars, and he wants to spend it today. It doesn't matter to him that he doesn't really need what's on the shelf. He just doesn't have the patience to wait for the next shipment that might contain a confection that will truly enhance his candy supply.
And that's where head coach Joe Gibbs needs to step in and play the part of the reasonable parent, explaining to Danny the benefits of spending wisely. Unfortunately, Redskins director of player personnel Vinny Cerato is always there drooling at the candy counter with Snyder. And they both seem to be in love with the flavor of the day, regardless of what (or who) it is.

Okay, I will say that the Danny definitely loves his candy, and the entire Lance Briggs situation had the entire Redskin Nation about to pounce on him. However, Asaunte Samuel is a player who by most accounts is at least a top 5 corner in this league and that’s worth entertaining. Historicly the 6th pick in the draft is somewhat of a crap shoot. If you can add a pro-bowl caliber corner with a nack for interceptions ( which is something the redskins have been lackin since Champ left ) then why wouldn’t you brouse to see how much it would cost? The skins also have Shawn Springs who, while injury prone, towards the end of his career, and not so quick to restructure his ballooned salary is still a very productive and sometimes dominate corner as a bargining chip. You couple Springs with the 6th pick overall and Lamar Marshall ( who would be a nice addition to the linebacker mix in a 3-4 scheme ) and you have the framework for a reasonable offer. Samuel, Smoot, and Carlos Rogers would form a solid corner core while the patriots would be in position to draft a guy like Okoye who would be a great bookend to Richard Seymour for years to come as well as Springs to help eleviate the loss of and impact corner like Samuels. Everybody is quick to bash Danny and Vinny and sometimes ( if not most of the time ) rightfully so.. but most of those same people also declare Washington to be the offseason winners because they have upgraded their weakest positions. While most will say the Redskins need to upgrade their pass rush and have reasonable depth at corner I say that the additon of Samuels for an unprooven Rookie with the same cap implications of a shawn springs is a no-brainer, just dont pay 20 dollars for a snickers bar Danny.
I’ll tell you what,no one in the league wants to see the patriots get the sixth pick in the draft…life would be over for everyone else.I would hate to see asante leave but once a player is disgruntled there’s no fixing it so for the pats to get a monster pick like six we can fill the gap left behind.
