Trade With Bucs Makes Sense for Raiders

Tuesday April 17, 2007
In the opinion of many, myself included, Calvin Johnson has separated himself from the pack as the top prospect in this year's NFL Draft class. And, according to Yahoo! Sports, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are plotting a move up to the No. 1 position, held by the Oakland Raiders, for the purpose of adding the phenom receiver out of Georgia Tech to their roster.

The trade apparently would include Tampa Bay's first four picks (their first-, two second-, and a third-round pick) for the No. 1 overall selection. If you go strictly by the trade chart used by many teams, the Buccaneers seem to get the better end of the deal in terms of pick value. But in my view, the Raiders should pull the trigger anyway.

By making this deal, Oakland would obviously miss out on Johnson, who isn't a huge need anyway if Randy Moss is not traded, and probably quarterback JaMarcus Russell, who would likely be selected by either the Detroit Lions or Cleveland Browns at No. 2 and No. 3. But sitting at No. 4, the Raiders would have a player fall to them that does fill a need.

Assuming the Bucs take Johnson, the Raiders would be assured of a shot at at least one of three players; Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn, Wisconsin OT Joe Thomas, or Oklahoma RB Adrian Peterson. If I'm calling the shots on draft day (and Raiders fans should be thankful I'm not) I would be willing to give up the chance to draft Johnson or Russell for one of those guys and three other picks in the top 68, especially considering the state of the Raiders offense and the depth of this year's draft class. As good as Johnson appears to be, and as high as Russell's ceiling seems, this team needs quality and quantity. One player is probably not going to put them in playoff contention regardless of his talent level.

The Raiders could hold out for more picks or possibly a player to even the trade value (based on the chart), but if the Buccaneers don't budge, Al Davis would be wise to make the deal anyway.

The question is, would Davis ever allow himself to pass on two physical specimens like Johnson and Russell. That's just not his nature.

wasn’t Bernstein from wisconsin. what does he have to do with this?…I say we draft CJ just like the chargers did with Eli and wait to make sure Russell (or whomever we want) is still there at 4. then make the deal.

Even though it sounds tempting, I think you would lose too much, nobody knows how good those lower picks would be. I think we would regret for decades passing on Jamarcus

Oh my gosh if the raiders even think about giving up their 1st round draft pick they can forget about their upcoming season and the black raider nation dynasty as well as everthing else. STUPID!!!!!!

This is a very intelligent thing to do. The fact that the Bucs have been signing so many QBs shows that they want to make it so that Oakland drafts a QB.

If we draft CJ then they’ll be at our mercy and I am of the belief that we should trade him to the highest bidder and get as meny draft picks as possible. Then we should rid ourselves of Lamont Jordan and replace him with Adrian Peterson.

NOOOO WAY that is giving up too much for one player who has not been proven in the NFL. Got to be a spoof.

WHAT? Are you people NUTZ!!!!

This is the GOLDED opportunity that the RAIDERS NEED! ALL those picks is like hitting the Lottery!

Yes - we would miss on Jamarcus an CJ .. who are “sure picks” (like the Raiders haven’t taken “sure picks” in the past the end up with nothing)… but how can y ou guarantee they play out?

The positions they can fill with those other picks are remarkable. They could fill 2 O-line positions, pick up at least one good reciever and two or three good LB’s and DB’s with these and their other picks!

7 PICKS IN THE FIRST 3 ROUNDS!!!!!!!!

come on people .. its not that hard to see how BIG this could be!

I think that about says it all IMO. The Raiders have more then just one need and going back to 4 still gives them a quality player that the NEED. It’s a must do IMO

With all due respect, quantity does not equate to quality. We should have learned our lesson with the Gruden trade where so many were fooled by the number of picks. We must draft Jamarcus Russell, for we have 10 picks to rebuild the Offense now and with possible Moss trade, can garner another draft pick or player. The Raiders need playmakers! We tried the average QB plan last year - Brooks and Walter - we must not add another. Jamarcus is better now with more upside than Garcia, Quinn, Carr, McNown, Walter, Leinart, etc and many NFL Starters. He is gifted ala Elway. The QB position is vital to the Offense especially when our Defense is very close to top-notch. If we don’t take care of business now, we’ll be discussing which QB should we draft for the next 20 years. I am a Raider fan since the 70’s and the only way we accept a trade is if a team gives us there 1st and 2nd round picks for the next 15 years - maybe then we can find another Jamarcus Russell - don’t bet on it.

I understand what you are saying but, going back to 4 overall is still QUALITY. The Raiders have a LOT of needs and the draft no matter where you pick is a crap shoot, so why not get as many picks as you can while still getting a “quality” player early?

I am just not a big fan of drafting a rookie QB with just about nothing around him (Carr, Harrington etc) especially no O-Line. It will KILL his early development IMO.

We need to either stay at #1, draft Cj and give him to the highest bidder or get a little more from Tampa right now if possible and pull the trigger

(13) Bob says:

Nobody is a sure thing in the Draft. Russell included. I’m sick and tired of losing. Drafting Russell is to risky. If he doesn’t pan out, it could set us back 10 years. I don’t want to end up like the Bengals. Davis will hold out for the best deal. If Tampa gives us their entire draft and next years 1st and 3rd round picks, getter done. Besides, the odds of Quinn or Russell still being available at number 4 are pretty good. Lets make a dynasty!!!!

(14) Hacksaw says:

I agree with Bob…there is definitely no such thing as a sure thing in the NFL draft. Our needs would be filled by Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas, JaMarcus Russel, or Brady Quinn. I think anything lower than #4 wouldn’t be worth it, but this is a great deal. Tampa take Calvin, Detroit takes either Quinn or Russell, Cleveland takes Thomas (or maybe even Peterson), this leaves the Raiders with either Quinn or Russell or Thomas. I’d be happy with all of those pics with the #1 pick anyways plus we can afford to gamble with the extra pics.
