2007 NFL Draft Results and Commentary

Saturday April 28, 2007
The first day of the 2007 NFL Draft is in the books, and as expected, LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell has been selected No. 1 overall by the Oakland Raiders. Not a big surprise, obviously, but in my view, Calvin Johnson would have been the safer pick. Russell has an incredible upside, if he achieves it, but I'm a bit concerned about his motivation... especially after he signs a deal guaranteeing him nearly $30 million.

At No. 2, the Detroit Lions did what we all were wondering if they would do; select another receiver in the top ten. But this time, I believe Matt Millen got it right with the incredibly gifted Johnson out of Georgia Tech.

The big news of the day, however, was the ability of the Cleveland Browns to land offensive tackle Joe Thomas with the No. 3 overall pick, and then trade back up into the first round to take sliding quarterback Brady Quinn. Could this finally be a turning point for a franchise that has been plagued by bad luck and poor decisions since rejoining the league? Read more...

poopy woopy says, Ohio state quarterback should have gone sooner. so what if he is short. he can play. he is fast, smart, and accurate. if his arm isnt enough to beat you, then his feet can do the rest. he is like a michael vick except, he can actually pass, and he doesnt look for an oppertunity to pull the ball down and run like vick. he looks to pass, if thats not open he will scramble, and if those dont work out, then he will run. not the reversed order like the ex-super star vick

Quinn slides to 22. Not surprising given his lack of performance in big games. He built numbers in college against an easy schedule. Obviously the NFL GMs recognized it.

I agree. Troy Smith should have gone a lot earlier in the draft. I think it will be obvious once Baltimore puts him on the field that everyone else that needed a quarterback made a grave mistake in not taking him!

naw troy smith isnt great and shouldnt even have got the heisman… Brady Quinn isnt yet a great quarterback but as he progresses in the nfl he will be among the best to have played. quinn will be more sucessful then smith in the nfl.

The quarterbacks that came out this year lack the talent that has come out over the past few years. However, I definitely believe that Quinn will have the best chance at being successful and being in the league longer.
