Moss Doesn't Make Patriots AFC Favorites

Monday April 30, 2007
The New England Patriots and Oakland Raiders finally agreed on a deal for disgruntled receiver Randy Moss on Sunday, which has lead more than one football pundit to speculate that the acquisition makes the Patriots early favorites to win Super Bowl XLII. In my view, however, that simply isn't the case.

Why?

Because New England was already positioned as top dog before this deal went down. Randy Moss is simply icing on the cake.

The Patriots, despite being banged up most of the 2006 season, were in the thick of things in the AFC playoffs back in January. And while the reigning world champion Indianapolis Colts have watched numerous players leave via free agency, New England has been beefing up the ranks.

Free agent Adalius Thomas was added to the linebacking corps. And before Moss was acquired, the team added Donte' Stallworth and Wes Welker at wide receiver. Linebacker, safety, and receiver were the only real areas of need for a team already considered a serious contender. And with two of those three areas satisfied by free agency, Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli were able to turn their attention to safety Brandon Meriweather, who, teamed with Rodney Harrison, should make the Pats defensive backfield an unpleasant place for opposing receivers.

So before Moss was added to the lineup, this Patriots team was already arguably the best on paper. And when our post-draft rankings are released later this week, you can bet New England will be sitting at the top.

I just call ‘em the way I see ‘em BJ. The Pats were already the team to beat, in my opinion, before adding Moss.

Why does someone accuse you of bias when you are stating the obvious, seems like he s the one with the bias..
Patriots have retooled & they are proven winners, I call that being merely rational

Maybe he is not the ENTIRE reason they’re a favorite, but come on, he certainly has the potential to be a big part of their success. Give the man some credit.

The Patriots aren’t the favorite and won’t win it all. They have one big problem.

Other than Maroney, no proven runningback. If he gets hurt again, the Patriots won’t even make it out of the first round of the playoffs.
Even if he does make it health through out the season, I don’t trust his blocking abilities.

It’s really an embarassment of riches at this point.

People will be talking about the 2007 Patriots 40 years from now.
