After 17 illustrious seasons in the NFL, it appears future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre is ready to call it quits. According to numerous media outlets, including the Biloxi Sun Herald -- which cites Favre's brother, Scott, as the source -- Favre has informed Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy of his intention to call it a career.
There's no word yet, though, on a pending announcement, so don't carve this one in stone just yet. Favre has been a little wishy-washy about returning each of the last few offseasons, and until he and the team make an official announcement, anything could happen.
This time, however, his desire to hang it up appears to be legit, which is a bit of a surprise considering the resurgent season he put together in 2007. Plus the Packers are a team that appears to be on an upswing, so I'm somewhat shocked he isn't coming back to make one final run at another championship, especially considering that the Packers' playoff run earlier this year ended in the NFC Championship game on an interception by the gritty QB.
Perhaps Favre doesn't feel the Packers can duplicate their surprising run in 2007, or maybe he's just tired of the year-round grind of being an NFL player. I don't know. Either way, it's a little sad to see his career end on such a negative note if, in fact, this is the way it ends.
