Favre Rumors Just Won't Die

Monday July 7, 2008
Another wave of Brett Favre mania recently swept through the media following a report by ESPN's Chris Mortenson that had the supposedly-retired quarterback considering a comeback (hardly a shocker, I know). The future Hall of Famer responded to the report by telling the South Mississippi Sun Herald that "it's all rumors", which it may be at this point.

Whether Mortenson is correct or not, though, the issue of Favre's plans on staying retired could be put to bed very easily. Number four could unequivocally put an end to the rumor mongering and end all speculation himself by signing his retirement papers and turning them in to the league. Or he could make a statement to the media indicating that in no way, shape, or form will he ever play in the NFL again.

But instead Favre allows the media firestorm to brew, and, in fact feeds it. Less than two months after his retirement, he told reporters he might be open to returning if new Packers starter Aaron Rodgers was injured. Also, ESPN recently cited a source as saying Favre has made comments to head coach Mike McCarthy about having the itch to play. Packers cornerback Al Harris said on ESPN's "NFL Live" that Favre made similar comments to him.

The reaction to the latest wave of rumors created by the Mortenson report has been typical.

"It's a slow news week, so the media is over-hyping the situation."

Let's face it, though. That's what the media does. But Favre doesn't help the situation and the longer he goes without putting an end to the rumors, the more attention the situation gets.

Perhaps that's his goal. I don't know.

It does keep his name in the news as we approach the release of Madden 2009, which coincidently bears his picture on the cover.
