Chad Johnson Could Out-Swim Michael Phelps

Friday August 15, 2008
If there's one thing Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Johnson has never been accused of it's being short on confidence or being afraid of the spotlight.

Okay, that's two things, but I think you know where I'm going with this.

On Wednesday, Johnson happily displayed that confidence stating on ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption that he could beat Olympic swimming star Michael Phelps. You know, the Michael Phelps who has been winning gold medals and setting records on a nightly basis here recently?

“The problem with Michael Phelps is there’s no competition where he is,” Johnson said. “Now if he came to where I’m from, which is the inner city, Liberty City [in Miami], I was the three-time Charles Hadley Pool champ. . . . I know a couple people who could beat Michael Phelps right now. Seriously, I’m telling you. And I’m one of them.”
Yes, you read that right. Ocho Cinco, who never met a camera he didn't like, has swimming buddies that are faster than the record-setting, gold medal-hording medal-hoarding Phelps. That's why they're competing for the Charles Hadley Pool championships while Phelps is off at this little even called the Olympics.

And Johnson can do it as well. Just ask him. Of course, he's busy with football right now, but perhaps a showdown with Phelps after the season is in order. I've never seen Johnson swim, but I suspect he would be handily defeated. The prospects of being publicly destroyed, however, might not stop him from agreeing to the spectacle.

After all, this is a guy who agreed to race a horse a couple years ago.

Michael Phelps, if you have read this article I think you should challenge this loose-lipped individual. There’s noone in this world thats better than Mr. Phelps and they are really in need of a phyciatric evaluation if they think they are. Thank you Mr. Johnson for the chuckle. I needed that. LoL!

people need to read behind the lines of what he was saying. I am amazed that so many people even know about what he said. He essentially said that if his former neighbors had the resources that Michael Phelps has, they have enough raw talent to have developed into world class swimmers. I believe that since Chad Johnson is already a world class athlete, he could easily translate that into success in swimming.

here we go again. Chad has to be the center of attention. Somebody get him a pacifier and shut him up. These are the Olympic Games. If the USA has a football team in the olympics then Chad “be a big boy and try out for the team.” I mean come on do we really have to listen to this cry baby who has been an okay player. quit talking trash and produce. We all know you can talk so now do what you need to do and do it with your mouth closed.

I know Mary T Meagher, one of the fastest swimmers of all time. She couldn’t run worth a lick. The two have nothing to do woth each other.

Chad needs to put his money where his mouth is, and sponsor a few of his buddies so they can take over the world in the pool. He’d make his money back in endorsements. Otherwise, shut up and don’t embarrass your friends.

this guy is so full of crap its not even funny, he doesnt know anything about swimming and as far as im concerned is the biggest waste of space. Swimming is one of the most underrated sports and anyone you has ever given it an honest shot know how hard it is. I hope the next time he gets into a pool he drowns….what a idiot. He should just stick to playing with balls

This guy is crazy. I dont believe he could beat anyone that swims on the elite level. Michael Phelps is by far one of the greatest swimmers that ever existed. One of the most talented all around swimmers. I believe someone would still have him beat in an individual breaststroke or backstroke event. But that doesnt mean that he wont still be on the podium. This guy would be lucky if he could dive in the water without being disqualified. Much less match up against the current mens world swimming champion.

Good luck, I would pay to see this race, maybe someone from Liberty City and the Charles Hadley Pool could pop up and join the record books of Swimming. Or maybe come to find out, this pool and its championships don’t exist. Anyone have any records of Mr. I can beat any man or animal at anything?

I think its funny that there is always someone in a crowd that has to run their mouth. Michael Phelps is essentially representing the United States and all of us in these Olympic games, and instead of being proud of him, Chad Johnson has to go and run smack on him. We are all proud of Michael Phelps for being an outstanding athlete and for bringing more attention to the sport of swimming by being someone people can look up to. Keep running your mouth Chad Johnson and look stupid. That will be your legacy!!! You do our country so proud….loser!

Charles Hadley is an elementary school. It was a joke, people. Sheesh.

(9) RICK says:

Maybe he can beat Phelps in the 50 or 100 meter freestyle. After all, Phelps’ own teammate, Lezak’s(sp?) time in the 4×100 freestyle relay was 2 SECONDS faster at 50 meters, and a second and a half faster at 100 meters. 2 seconds at 50 meters is HUGE. Phelps might lose a 50 meter freestyle, he doesn’t seem to be that good at sprints. Am I wrong? We don’t know what Johnson can do in the 50 meter, do we?

okay, i think that Chad Johnson is a amazing WR in the NFL. Easily one of the best if his head is on right. I do believe he could translate his skill into swimming if he really wanted to. If they swam today, dont get me wrong, Phelps has his number, but i think if Chad really really wanted to swim, he is a better conditioned athlete. Let’s face it, Football is much harder than swimming.. Chad could do it, if he wanted to.

cody, you are retarded, swimming is the most underated sport ever, how about you join a competitive team for a week and see how hard it is

(12) ganryu says:

Kobe Bryant watched Phelps get his 8th gold in person, and then mentioned how he felt so proud to be representing his country along with the likes of Phelps. No silly challenges or other ridiculous remarks. I think Chad is just jealous that he will likely never have the opportunity to stand on a podium in front of the world to receive a gold medal.

(13) Cody (again) says:

If Football was an olympic sport, chad could win a gold medal.. but unfortunitly, it isnt… Chad is cocky and could not beat phelps today.. but he is a fine athlete and has the potential to translate his condition into other sports.

(14) Jennifer says:

I think cody has a right to an opinion, but before he makes it known, he needs to try swimming…it takes a lot more than you think… not just to the pool for fun but serious swimming. put yourself on interval and see if you still have the same thoughts. Have you SEEN how bulky he is? Y do you think swimmers are so skinny and toned? I’ll tell you why… all that extra muscle makes ppl SINK…sorry but i dont think he will EVER get the focus and drive it takes to beat MICHAEL PHELPS! Did you even WATCH the olympics?? Hes been training since he was 11! seriously! Chad is how old?? yeah… get your facts… it doesnt matter the skill level he has for a certain sport… ive seen football players try to swim! Im so frustrated at the stupidity of the whole thing! He will never b known for showing up michael phelps no matter how hard he tries! the only thing he has that michael phelps doesnt is a big mouth. do you see phelps bashing on someone else?? NO cause he doesnt need to and hes too good for that. Go try some hardcore swimming for about a week and then tell me that you dont want to puke your guts up, and that chad can still beat michael phelps… i bet katie hoff and dara torres could beat him no prob. even after he practices everyday for 4 years…

(15) Cody (once again) says:

ok.. listen people. Chad Ocho Cinco is a great athelete, like i said before. By the way, i am a swimmer and i also play football. (both varsity for my school) and they are both very conditioned sports.. dont tell me to go try swimming when i do swim. The reason i form that opinion is because and only because i do both.. Football takes more of an athelete to play.. Dont get me wrong, they are both very tiring and tough.

(16) Edgar says:

Mr. Alder you misspelled “hoard”, as in “gold medal-hoarding”. Sheesh.

(17) Sam B says:

I think it would be wonderful if the two of these athletes did a charity swim race. They could raise a ton of money for a good cause. And it could be really fun to watch!!!

(18) Guilherme says:

I just can’t stop laughing at these things Ocho Cinco says… What about racing Phelps and a horse at the same time?
