Giants Talking to Strahan
Just one day after learning they will probably be without the services of Osi Umenyiora for the entire 2008 NFL season, the New York Giants reportedly have been in contact with retired defensive end Michael Strahan about returning to the team.
Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reported Monday that the Giants called Strahan to gauge his interest in rejoining the team. As we eluded to Sunday, Strahan very well may be interested in coming back. If the price is right.
Speculation has it that Strahan wanted the Giants to pay him $8 million to keep playing this year, but who knows what his price is now that he has the added leverage of Umenyiora's absence from the lineup. If he is still willing to play for the same amount, the Giants shouldn't hesitate to invite him back with open arms. If he gets greedy and ups the ante, however, the team may be content to look elsewhere, including their own roster.
Head coach Tom Coughlin has already indicated Mathias Kiwanuka, who had been converted to linebacker, would be moved back to defensive end to fill the void. Kiwanuka was a defensive end in college, so it's not like he'll have a major adjustment to make.
Ideally, though, the team would probably prefer to bring back Strahan and use Kiwanuka at defensive end only in passing situations.
