Simeon to Chicago?
Defensive end Simeon Rice, who last played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2007, made it known recently that he would like to make a comeback in the NFL. And Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times seems to think it will be with the Chicago Bears. For the right price, it makes sense. But before you get all worked up Bears fans, I don't think he's the answer to Chicago's anemic pass rush.
Rice has Chicago connections having gone to high school locally and attended the University of Illinois downstate. His best years also just happened to be in Tampa Bay where his line coach was Rod Marinelli, who now holds the same position with the Bears. So it's only natural to make the Bears the favorites to give him a comeback opportunity.
The problem, though, is Rice has not played since 2007. And he only played in ten games that season; eight with the Denver Broncos and two with the Colts. And he was pretty much ineffective at that time. He also played in just ten games the previous year and recorded just two sacks, so I'm not sure why the Bears front office would feel like he would be a consistent threat from the outside at this point.
But I guess it wouldn't hurt to take a look-see. Chicago could certainly use a boost in their pass rush. But they're probably more likely to find it in the NFL Draft, free agency, or perhaps even their own roster than from the 34-year-old Rice.
