Falcons Interested in Gonzalez

Monday April 13, 2009
Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post is reporting that the Atlanta Falcons are seriously interested in trading for veteran tight end and future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez. Per the report, the Falcons might be willing to give up their second-round pick in this year's NFL Draft to land the Pro Bowler.

Considering the Falcons' tight ends caught just 19 passes in 2008, an upgrade at the position should be on the off-season to-do list. Gonzalez may be on the downside of his career, but his pass-catching ability and veteran experience would be a huge addition to the offense. Not only would Gonzalez's presence open things up more for wide receivers Roddy White and Michael Jenkins, it would also make it very difficult for defenses to key on running back Michael Turner. And it could take the Falcons offense to another level.

So, even if Gonzalez only has a few good seasons left in him, he would be well worth a second-round pick for the Falcons. And it would probably give the veteran a better shot at winning that elusive NFL title since the Falcons appear closer to contending at this time than the rebuilding Kansas City Chiefs.

The questions is, though, would KC be willing to let him go? After all, they did just acquire QB Matt Cassel, and if the team hopes to make a quick turnaround like the Falcons did in 2008, he needs all the weapons he can get as well.

Plus there is the fact that Gonzalez is an icon in Kansas City, having played his entire career for the Chiefs, and they simply may not want to let him go.
