As the Pittsburgh Steelers get set to embark on the defense of their latest world championship, they first face a major distraction off the field. Despite the absence of a formal investigation or of criminal charges, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, per numerous media reports, is facing accusations of sexual assault in a lawsuit filed last week in Washoe County, Nevada.

Harrah's employee Andrea McNulty is alleging that Roethlisberger asked her to come to his hotel room to fix the television, and that he used the opportunity to force her to have sex with him.

The absence of criminal charges, however, raises a little skepticism as to the validity of the charges. But that certainly doesn't mean the accusations should be ignored either. At this point it's best to keep an open mind either way until the facts come out.

According to Profootballtalk.com, Roethlisberger has of course denied (through his lawyer) the charges against him.
