Chargers Release Tomlinson

In a move that was hardly unexpected, the San Diego Chargers released running back LaDainian Tomlinson Monday after nine seasons with the team. The future Hall of Famer was scheduled to make $5 million with the club in 2010, so it made sense that it was only a matter of time before he would be cut loose.

The fact that Tomlinson was indeed given his walking papers now, though, indicates the two parties are splitting on amicable terms. The timing of the move allows him to get a jump on most other free agents since he won't have to wait for the signing period to open March 5, which says a lot about how the organization feels about his contribution over the years.

Having been one of the most dominating offensive players in the league for much of his career, Tomlinson is a sure-fire Hall of Famer when he decides to hang it up. But indications are he isn't ready to do that just yet. He has suggested, however, that his biggest remaining goal is to win a championship, and where he lands next will be influenced by his perception of the team's ability to win it all in the next year or two.

Chances are, however, he is going to have to take a significant cut in pay to make that happen.
