Hi, I was wandering whether you would like to help me with a short explanation for a very-alien-to-me expression. American football is not something familiar for my experience and I have a translation to write, so I would thank you gratefully if you could help me a little.
The sentence is:
The coach called an end sweep on third and 20.
Thank you again.

Where’s the answer? I think it would be they were on the 20 yrd line, third down and he called a sweep around the end. Is that right ?

It means 3rd down with 20 yards to go until a first down… the coach called a play called end sweep. Look that up, it shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Until now… trying to get the basics of football was being compared to find a needle in a hay stack.
