With the excitement of Super Bowl XXXV barely fading, the newborn XFL sets to kick off its inaugural season. Vince McMahon, owner of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), has promised to bring us an exciting smash-mouth brand of football that combines the best of the NFL with some very interesting rule variations that should feed the average football fan's hunger for brutality.
McMahon is going to try to ride the wave of the NFL whose season ended just six days before the opening of the XFL season. He will also be trying to persuade millions of his wrestling faithful to follow his new league by using some of the same promotional tactics.
The XFL cheerleaders have been a major focus of the league's promotion, which is no surprise, but NBC and McMahon have other surprises in store. Look for a heavy focus on sideline and huddle interaction between players and coaches.
Cameras will be mounted in places they've never been before. And of course, the cheerleaders will work their way into many segments throughout the game.
Dick Ebersol, the Chairman of NBC Sports, said recently in an ESPN interview, "McMahon and Ebersol are truly going to open up the game to television in a way that it's never been opened before."
To back up Ebersol's comments, XFL broadcast consultant Michael Weisman recounted a phone conversation with Mr. McMahon, "He told me Michael, you are not limited. You can do anything that you want to do. You want to put a camera on the field? You can! You want to put a camera in the huddle? You can! We will learn how far to push the envelope."
McMahon is also promising a more intense style of football. He is giving his players the incentive to play with that brutal intensity by giving bonuses to each member of the winning team. The players will have base salaries, but the players that win the most will make the most. What an interesting concept!
