"I realize Doug Flutie is 38 years old, but Rob Johnson has never proven to be a consistent winner in the NFL, not to mention the fact that he can't stay healthy. If Johnson goes down, Alex Van Pelt will be leading this team. That's a scary thought for Bills' fans."

The Buffalo Bills had a huge turnover on their roster during the off-season, but possibly the biggest loss was 38-year old veteran quarterback Doug Flutie. The Bills decided they were tired of the constant quarterback controversies, so they cut him loose, setting themselves up for a quarterback disaster.

Rob Johnson seems to have all the tools to be a quality starter, but he can't stay healthy for any length of time. Last season, Flutie was waiting in the wings every time Johnson went down, and he performed well when given the chance. This year when Johnson goes down, the Bills will have Alex Van Pelt to hang their hopes on.

Rookie running back Travis Henry has been a bright spot. He has looked very good in workouts. He is an exceptional runner and he is proving to be a better receiver than he was billed to be coming out of college.

The Bills also had some big losses on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive end Marcellus Wiley is joining Flutie in San Diego, and the coaching staff is hoping this year's second-round pick Aaron Schobel will fill the position. Schobel certainly has potential, but Wiley's 10 ½ sacks will be tough to match in his rookie season.

The Chicago Bears signed massive defensive tackle Ted Washington, leaving a gaping hole in the middle of the line, which Shawn Price appears to have the edge at filling. Also gone is linebacker Sam Rodgers, whose departure will be softened by the switch to a 4-3 defense.

Wade Phillips was released from his duties as head coach at the end of last season, and Gregg Williams was hired as his replacement. Williams is a strong disciplinarian, and he has already ruffled a few feathers in training camp. He makes the players run laps in front of the fans when they make a mistake, and he even threatened to cut a group of rookies who failed to sign autographs for fans.

Overview

This will definitely be a transition year for the Bills, but the biggest question mark will be at quarterback. Johnson has yet to prove he can be a consistent winner and he hasn't stayed healthy enough to lead a team for an entire season. If Johnson proves he can't handle the starting job, the Bills are in trouble.

In my opinion, the Bills are in for a season of struggles and they will finish below .500.
